It’s senseless to build a huge capacity theatre in Kumasi – Mark Okraku

According to Deputy Minister for Tourism Art and Culture Hon Mark Okraku Mantey, it doesn't make sense to build a large capacity amphitheater in Kumasi. He argued that it would be a waste of resources for the government to construct a theater that only two or three Ghanaian musicians can fill with 3,000 fans at a particular event.

He explained in an interview with Angel FM Kumasi that building a 3,000 capacity theater for only a few artists to fill throughout the year doesn't make sense when conducting a benefit analysis. Mr. Okraku Mantey pointed out that most musicians are unable to fill even the National Theatre in the capital, which has a capacity of less than 2,000.

He emphasized that they could have built a 3,000 capacity theatre, but it became apparent that in the whole year, only a few musicians could fill it. "The national theatre is not up to 2,000 capacity yet a lot of artistes cannot fill it as I speak, so why don't you build 1,000?" he asked. He said this to justify the government's decision to construct a less-capacity theatre at the Kumasi Cultural Centre.

In one of its promises prior to the 2020 elections, the government promised to build theatres across the country. Although the Kumasi Theatre at the Cultural Centre is only 1,000 capacity, it will have spillover spaces for other activities. The Deputy Minister revealed that the construction of the theatre is currently underway and will be completed in July. The source of funding for the project is from the IMF.
