Ken Agyapong gifts Anas GH¢50k after defamation victory against him

Investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas' GH₵25 million defamation suit against Kennedy Ohene Agyapong was dismissed by the Accra High Court on 15 March 2023.

After the Assin Central MP aired a counter-documentary titled "Who watches the watchman" in response to Anas' "Number 12", Anas sued him for defamation.

After ruling that Anas had failed to prove that Ken Agyapong had defamed him, the judge, Justice Eric Baah, said the MP's documentary had exposed shady dealings by Anas and his friends.

The court, after ruling that what Anas was doing was not investigative journalism but investigative terrorism and that Mr Agyapong was justified in calling him "blackmailer, corrupt, extortionist and evil", awarded the MP GH₵50,000.00 in damages.

However, Kennedy Agyapong in his media interview after the judgement said he was not interested in the GH₵50,000.00 damages awarded him by the court.

"I'm telling you today, I don't need the 50,000. Let him live with his conscience, I will give it to him," he said.

The Assin Central lawmaker demanded an apology from Anas, saying the GHS50,000 damages alone was not enough, and dedicated his triumph to former GFA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi.

All I'm saying is that Kwesi Nyantakyi and the men in this room deserve special congratulations for winning. No citizen of this country should have to go through what they have gone through, especially Anas' shame in this country.

Compensation is not enough. He should apologise to us victims and now I appeal to Ghanaians that we must have the courage to speak the truth in this nation, he said.
