Kwabena Agyapong reacts to Frimpong Boateng’s galamsey report

Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, who is aspiring to be the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), recently stated that if he were the President, he would have taken swift action on Professor Frimpong Boateng’s galamsey report.

The report, which was presented to the Chief of Staff in March 2021, accused some NPP officials of promoting and engaging in illegal mining. Agyapong believes that action on the report should have been taken immediately and that it should not have been on the President's desk for two years without any attention.

During an interview with Nhyira FM’s Nana Jantuah on Kuro Yi Nsem, Agyapong said that the report would not have been left on his desk for two years without attention if he were the President. He also suggested that Prof. Frimpong should have been more assertive and resigned if the President failed to implement some recommendations in the report. Agyapong believes that Frimpong should have taken firm action during his tenure as Minister and that he should not have waited until he was no longer in office to speak out.

Agyapong also shared his plans to regenerate the forests in the country by putting a moratorium on surface mining, including community mining, should he become President. He stated that the only mining activity he would approve as President is deep mining, which involves significant capital and is done sustainably.

Agyapong believes that mining has not been beneficial to Africa and that Ghana has not received much from it. He believes that mining areas in the country are characterized by abject poverty, and he is not in support of illegal mining, known as galamsey.
