A 21-year-old aspiring hairdresser, Chiamaka Okwuegbunam, has been released from Onitsha prison after being falsely accused of stealing a towel and spending five months behind bars. It was actually her ex-boyfriend who stole the towel and left it in her house.
When the owner of the towel and a vigilante group found it there, Chiamaka was taken to the police station and later to court. Unfortunately, she couldn't afford bail and was thrown into prison.
Thankfully, activist Harrison Gwamnishu heard about her case and was able to help secure her release. Chiamaka stated that her Uncle who knew what was happening couldn't afford the bail requirements.
With nobody coming to represent her in court or bail her out, she spent five months in prison. She expressed her relief at being free and stated that she won't be going back to her ex who caused her so much trouble.
Harrison Gwamnishu took up her case and was able to perfect her bail condition on Tuesday, April 18, and secure her release. It's great to see justice being served and Chiamaka being able to return home.
