Mahama should contest as an Independent Candidate if he’s popular– Solomon Nkansah

Thu, 4 May 2023 Source: Club Mate

Solomon Nkansah, a strong member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has a different opinion on who should run for presidency in Ghana in 2024. Although many NDC supporters believe that John Mahama is the best candidate to lead the party to victory, Mr. Nkansah disagrees.

He challenges Mr. Mahama and anyone who thinks that the NDC cannot afford to lose him to run as an independent candidate if he can get as many votes as he did when he was under the NDC in 2012, 2016, and 2020.

Mr. Nkansah believes that Mr. Mahama's popularity in Ghanaian politics is due to the NDC brand and not because of anything he has done himself. During an interview on Ultimate 106.9 FM in Kumasi with Cup of Tea show host Julius Caesar Anadem, Mr. Nkansah said that people who claim Mr. Mahama is the most marketed candidate are overlooking the fact that the NDC party itself is a brand.

Mr. Nkansah further stated that the NDC is a popular and well-accepted party in Ghana, and any candidate presented to the Ghanaian electorate with the right marketing strategy, structure, track record, and the right people standing will not suffer at elections. He argued that those who maintain that the previous candidate is so popular that the NDC cannot bring in a new candidate do not understand the NDC's strength.

Mr. Nkansah challenged Mr. Mahama and anyone who thinks he is too popular to engage in a popularity contest to see who is more popular. He noted that some individuals have contested as independent candidates for parliaments and won across both parties. Therefore, if Mr. Mahama is as popular as people claim, then he should contest as an independent flagbearer for the presidency.

In conclusion, Mr. Nkansah emphasized that the popular person is the one who wins, and that claims of Mr. Mahama's popularity make people reluctant to canvass votes for the NDC, leading to daydreaming.
