Man sets wife on fire for washing his clothes instead of giving him food

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 46-year-old man, Hassan Azeez, for allegedly dousing his wife with petrol and setting her ablaze.

According to a statement by SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the spokesman of the state police command, the suspect was arrested after the father of the victim reported to the Ibogun Divisional Headquarters that his daughter, Olayinka Hassan, was set ablaze by her husband over a petty argument on October 22, 2022, and that the victim, a mother of one, was rushed to a hospital in Ibadan.

Following the report, CSP Samuel Oladele of the DPO Ibogun Division immediately gathered his men and headed to the scene. But by the time I arrived, the culprit had fled. Since then, the policemen have been hunting him down and finally caught him on 22 January.

When questioned, the suspect, who claimed to have fled to Benin Republic, admitted to the crime but blamed the devil.

He claimed that when he asked the victim to cook him a meal, she was busy washing clothes instead of cooking for him. He went on to say that he became irritated because he was hungry and that the irritation led him to pour petrol on her and set her on fire. He admitted that the woman was washing his clothes when he asked whose clothes she was washing. Oyeyemi said

The homicide squad of the State Criminal Investigation Department has received the suspect for further investigation and possible prosecution.
