A man from Nigeria was shot after he attacked the policemen who were guarding the State House, which is where the President of Guyana, Dr. Irfaan Ali, lives.

Bethel Ikenna Chimezie, who was 35 years old and worked for a cleaning service, was named as the suspect by the police.

The police say that the man went into a security room on the south side of State House at Main, Carmichael, and New Market Streets at about 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 15, 2022.

The man allegedly told the guards, "I want the President (Mohamed Irfaan Ali)," and then pulled a knife out of his pants and stabbed Presidential Guard Telon Perreira five times in the neck and body.

Other guards tried to stop him, but he managed to disarm another of his 9MM pistols and run back to Carmichael Street, where he started shooting at them.

The President's guards shot back, and the man shot back as the guards chased him to New Market Street, where he was finally shot.

On videos, people can be seen telling the injured man to drop the gun as he lies on the ground.

At the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, both the suspect and the hurt Presidential Guard are getting medical care (GPHC).

The Guyana Police Force said that a request for more information about the attacker has been sent to the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL).

"The GPF has asked INTERPOL to do a full background check on him, including finding out if he has a criminal record or is part of a criminal group," a senior police officer told reporters.

While this was going on, President Irfaan Ali went to the hospital to see how the security guard was doing who was hurt while fighting off the intruder at State House.
