March and Eat? Invest in developmental projects not Independence Day celebrations – Sophia Akuffo

Sophia Akuffo, a former Chief Justice, has called on the government to use the money earmarked for the upcoming Independence Day celebrations to fund development initiatives instead.

She argued that given the state of the economy, it would be better to invest the funds earmarked for the event in initiatives that would benefit the general public.

She was reacting to the government's declaration that Ho, the capital of the Volta Region, would host this year's 6 March celebrations.

This year's celebrations will mark 66 years of Ghana's independence.

In an interview with Citi News on the sidelines of a public lecture on the 66th anniversary of Ghana's independence hosted by the University of Ghana, the former Chief Justice advised government to spend the money on a long-lasting project rather than a one-day wonder.

"We should commemorate our independence day, but it is pointless to rally and march. If they had chosen a deprived area and built a new school, or if they had chosen a dilapidated district hospital or health centre and upgraded it and named it Independence School or Independence Hospital, I think any money spent on this celebration with everybody travelling to the Volta Region would be good.

"Then they choose one region and one project every year and they do it; that would be money better spent...

They will talk, march, eat and come back and that will be it. But this will benefit the people and last.”
