In a tragic incident, a police officer named Constable David Gbati was fatally shot by his colleague, ASP Frank Nsiah, while they were on their way for an operation in Awaso, within the Bibiani Anhweaso Bekwai Municipality. It has been reported that ASP Nsiah, who was under the influence of alcohol at the time, engaged in an argument with his subordinates in the service vehicle, leading to the unfortunate incident.
Following the incident, Gbati's body has been taken to the Sehwi Wiawso mortuary, while ASP Frank Nsiah has been detained at the Bekwai police station as investigations continue. The police have initiated an inquiry to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the death of the police constable in the Western North Region on May 5, 2023.
Efforts were immediately made to provide medical assistance to Gbati, but regrettably, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Inspector-General of Police took prompt action by dispatching a team, led by Commissioner of Police Mrs Habiba Twumasi Sarpong, Director-General/Welfare, to assess the situation and engage with the personnel.
Furthermore, another team comprising members of the Police Management Board, headed by Commissioner of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno, Director-General/Administration, was dispatched to visit the bereaved family. Their objective was to officially inform them of the passing of their loved one, express condolences, and assure them of a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
In order to provide support during this difficult time, a police clinical psychologist has been assigned to assist the grieving family, while an additional team of clinical psychologists has been deployed to the Western Regional Police Command to provide psycho-social support to the personnel who have been deeply affected by the loss of their colleague.
Meanwhile, the suspected police officer is currently in custody as part of the investigation process, in accordance with the due process of the law. This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining professionalism and upholding the highest standards within the police force to prevent such devastating events from occurring in the future.
