One Person Arrested as Railway Authority Denies Authorizing Sawing off Railway Tracks for Scraps

One person is arrested as the railway authority denies permission to cut up railway tracks for scrap.

Claims that the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has authorised the hacking of railway tracks in several areas of the country have been described as "untrue" by the CEO of the GRDA, Yaw Owusu.

This comes in the wake of news reports that some unscrupulous scrap dealers have been cutting up railway lines at Twifo Nuamakrom in the Central Region and selling them as scrap.

In an interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi for Peace FM's morning show 'Kokrokoo', the Chief of Nuamakrom, Nana Akrofi Koram, said the scrap dealers were using gas welding machines and hacksaws to saw off the railway sleepers and rails.

To sell them, they cut, extract and melt them.

What is unexpected is that they are now doing this in full view of the public, he complained.

The scrap dealers claim they have permission to cut the railway tracks.

But Mr Yaw Owusu has refuted this claim.

Speaking on the same platform on Thursday, he claimed that such reports were untrue and that "we have not given anybody permission to saw off the railway tracks and use them as scrap".

He added that only one person had been arrested so far.
