Parents Arrested After They Left 2-Year-Old Home Alone And Travelled

Authorities say that two South Carolina parents were arrested this week because they left their toddler home alone while they went to New York.

Donald Gekonge and Darline Aldrich, who are both 24 years old, were both booked into the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center on suspicion of being bad to a child.

WCBD said that on November 17, police got a report that a 2-year-old child was alone in an apartment complex in Charleston. The child's father, Gekonge, had texted that he was in New York, so the child was alone.

Police said that a "emergency walk-through" was done when the apartment managers couldn't get in touch with anyone inside.

Police said that when they went into the house, the 2-year-old was sleeping on a bed in the living room.

Aside from having a dirty diaper, the child seemed to be fine.

The boy was taken to the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital so that he could be checked out more.

At first, it was hard to get in touch with Gekonge and the child's mother, Darline Aldrich.

When Gekonge finally called the apartment complex himself, he told an officer that he had left the apartment early that morning and was only "a few states away."

Gekonge later said he was "on business" in New York and thought Aldrich was taking care of the child.

Later, he changed his story again and said that Aldrich was also in New York "because of an emergency."

Aldrich and Gekonge are in jail. Gekonge's bond is set at $50,000, and Aldrich's is set at $75,000.
