On Tuesday 7 March 2023, Accra experienced a three-hour downpour that flooded some parts of the city.
Thunder and startling lightning rumbled through the air before the rains began at 3:40 am.
Pictures and videos posted on social media showed some pedestrians struggling to get to their destinations in their cars as the downpour flooded major roads. Drivers had to plan different routes to reach their destinations.
Residents of Kasoa Old Barrier, Weija, Dansoman and Lapaz had difficulty navigating through the water.
Parts of the city experienced power cuts due to the lightning in the atmosphere.
Some parts of the city, especially Kasoa Old Barrier, did not have working streetlights due to the rain.
The Ghana Meteorological Service issued a press release before the rains, informing the public that "South-eastern Ghana has been engulfed by a rain-bearing cloud. As a result, the Volta Region is experiencing rain of varying intensity. The Greater Accra and Eastern regions will be affected before it spreads to the Central, Western and parts of the Ashanti regions. Flash floods are likely to occur in some areas of Greater Accra.
