In a tragic incident, a self-proclaimed religious leader has been arrested for allegedly causing the death of a woman by setting her on fire with anointing oil.

A man who claims to be a religious leader, believed to be in his early 50s, has been apprehended by the Akyem Oda Divisional Police Command in the Eastern Region. He is accused of causing the death of a married woman by setting her on fire with anointing oil.

The arrested individual is Pastor Isaac Okyeam, also known as Pastor Owusu. He was taken into custody after the 42-year-old woman, Mrs. Ama Nkansah Appiah, passed away on May 2, 2023, at the Korle-bu teaching hospital in Accra. She had been transferred there from the Akyem Oda Government Hospital due to severe burns, suspected to have been inflicted by the aforementioned self-proclaimed man of God.

The victim's younger sister, Adwoa Gloria, provided an account of the incident. According to her, on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, her sister visited the residence of Pastor Isaac Okyeam in Akyem Asawase, a suburb of Akyem Awisa in the Birim-South district of the Eastern Region. The purpose of the visit was for spiritual consultations since the pastor was considered her spiritual father.

Adwoa Gloria further explained that her sister returned home later that day with severe burns and in critical condition. Despite their persistent efforts, her husband and sisters were unable to get her to reveal the cause of her injuries.

The victim was immediately rushed to the Oda Government Hospital, but her deteriorating condition necessitated her transfer to the Korle-bu teaching hospital in Accra, where she tragically passed away.

In their quest to uncover the truth behind her sister's death, Adwoa Gloria stated that the family discovered evidence linking her sister's visit to the pastor as the source of the burns. She said, "I took her dress and it reeked of the oil used by pastors, which aroused the husband's suspicion that the burns were not caused by gas as previously suspected but rather a visit to a pastor. Unfortunately, she died on Tuesday."

Confronted by the deceased's family, Pastor Isaac Okyeam vehemently denied any involvement in the incident. However, the family's investigation revealed compelling evidence against him. Adwoa Gloria recounted, "I took them to the place, and it was evident that my sister suffered the burns at his place. Her footprints were all over the place, and there was a bucket containing a mixture of various types of oils, candles, and a partially burnt mattress."

Further strengthening suspicions of Pastor Isaac Okyeam's culpability in the woman's death, visible burns were observed on his right hand and leg. Adwoa Gloria mentioned that subsequent investigations unveiled that during her sister's visit to the pastor, he applied a spiritual oil that unexpectedly caught fire, causing injuries to both of them. Sadly, these injuries ultimately led to her sister's untimely demise.

As the investigations into the case continue, the community grapples with the shocking incident involving the alleged misuse of spiritual practices, highlighting the need for scrutiny and accountability within religious circles.
