The police in Accra have launched a hunt for a businessman who is suspected of defrauding a colleague in Obojo near Madina of GH70,000 in a visa scam according to the Ghanaian Time.
Sena Lumor, the victim, reportedly gave the suspect, Mohammed Zain Ibrahim, who is said to be in his 30s, money under the pretense of getting him a visa for the United States of America (USA).
The alleged scam was revealed to the Ghanaian Times by a source at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters of the Ghana Police Service yesterday in Accra.
The police source said last May, Ibrahim, who lives in the same vicinity with the victim, at Obojo, demanded and collected GH¢70, 000 for the visa application but absconded.
According to the source, a report was made to the Documentation and Visa Fraud Unit of the CID, and that “as part of investigations, the Unit had secured a bench warrant from the Accra Magistrate Courtfor the arrest of the suspect, to assist in investigations”.
The police appealed to persons, who might have fallen victim of visa scam to report to the police to assist in investigations.
According to a police source, Ibrahim, who lives in the victim's neighborhood of Obojo, sought and obtained GHC70,000 for the visa application but then fled.
The source states that the Documentation and Visa Fraud Unit of the CID received a report, and as part of its investigation, "the Unit obtained a bench warrant from the Accra Magistrate Court for the arrest of the suspect, to aid in investigations."
People who may have been the victims of a visa scam were urged by the police to come forward and cooperate with their investigations.
