Prof Frimpong Boateng Spills Names of Top Officials Engaged in ‘Galamsey’

In recent news, former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Prof Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, has alleged that some top government officials are involved in the illegal mining activities commonly referred to as 'galamsey.' In fact, Prof Frimpong Boateng claimed that the rot goes as high as the Jubilee House, the government seat according to a report by MyJoyOnline.

Last month, President Akufo-Addo ordered the police to investigate these allegations, but MyJoyOnline.com obtained a 36-page document written by Prof. Boateng, which he addressed to the President, Chief of Staff, and the police. In this document, Prof. Boateng mentioned specific individuals he claims interfered with his efforts to tackle the problem of illegal mining.

He mentioned that some party officials, from the national level to the unit committee level, had friends, agents, relatives, financiers, or relatives who were involved in illegal mining, with most of them employing Chinese workers. However, Prof. Boateng was quick to clarify that he was not referring to party people who had legitimate mining concessions.

Moreover, he accused a former NPP MP in the Ashanti Region of selling illegally acquired concessions at GH¢200,000 each, which infuriated the party in the constituency.

As a result, during the 2020 primaries to select a candidate, the electorate voted against the then sitting MP, who had more resources than other candidates, and he lost to a lesser-known individual who had no financial backing.

Prof. Boateng stressed that the allegations of missing excavators in 2020 were fabrications of individuals in the government who wanted him out of the way. He also claimed that some appointees in the Jubilee House were either involved in illegal mining or were supporting it.

In an earlier interview with state broadcaster GBC, Prof. Boateng had insisted that the rot goes as high as the government seat, Jubilee House. He also alleged that some individuals supervised his ousting from the Ministry to perpetuate the canker.

In light of these revelations, Ghanaians have called on state security agencies to investigate the matter. Although the President has asked the Ghana Police Service to probe the issue, Prof. Boateng has now written to the Presidency, naming the specific individuals he referred to in his claims.
