Residents rush with gallons for fuel from fallen tanker around Nsawam-Suhum road

Some people from Kyekyewere, a town on the Accra-Kumasi Road between Nsawam-Suhum and Kyekyewere, rushed to the side of the road last Friday to scoop fuel that had spilled from a broken-down tanker.

Ghanaian Times saw people in the area, mostly young men, women, and children, with containers in their hands, daring to scoop up fuel.

The Ghanaian Times took pictures of the scene on their way to Kumasi last Friday around 4:00 p.m., not long after the accident happened.

Not even a week ago, a similar accident was said to have happened at Lepusi in the Nanumba North Municipality of the Northern Region. People from the area gathered at the accident site, supposedly to get fuel.

When the police arrived on time, they put up a fence around the accident scene so that fire fighters from the Ghana National Fire Service could spray water on the tanker carrying oil products to keep a fire from starting.

The tanker accident on the busy Accra-Kumasi road caused a traffic jam because police officers had to slow down the cars to let the fire fighters clean up the spill.

The Ghanaian Times heard that the accident happened when the tanker was on its way from Accra to Kumasi.

People who live near the road often rush to the scene of an accident involving a fuel tanker, putting their lives at risk.

Even though there were no fire explosions from the recent fallen tankers, people are said to have died in blazing fires as they rushed to get fuel from road accidents involving fuel tankers from other countries, especially Nigeria.
