Sad News Hits Chris Hughton

Fri, 3 Mar 2023 Source: Club Mate

The death of Chris Hughton's father has delayed the official announcement of his appointment as the next Black Stars coach, according to Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Henry Asante Twum.

The former Brighton manager was hired two weeks ago and was expected to be unveiled before March, but he remained in the UK for some time following the death of his father. Hughton is now likely to travel to Ghana for his unveiling next week.

“Chris had to stay in the UK because he lost his father and needed time to grieve and organise the funeral. That's why he hasn't visited Ghana yet,” Asante Twum told 3Sports.

“If all goes as planned, we expect Chris to visit Ghana next week. We are constantly interacting with the media, planning his unveiling and preparing for the matches," Henry added.

According to Henry, the announcement of the squad for the double-header against Angola and the introduction of Ghana's coaches are also expected.

"He is working; Chris and his assistants will be introduced at the same time. We'll let everyone know the time and place of his unveiling when he arrives and we'll use it to promote the Angola game. There will also be squad announcements, contract information and targets for the new technical team.”

Ghana take on Angola in Kumasi on 23 March before travelling to Luanda four days later for the return leg. With both teams on four points after two games, the Black Stars and Angola are level on points at the top of Group E.

Hughton was born in England to Irish-born Christine (née Bourke) and Ghanaian postman William Hughton. Hughton made 53 appearances for the Republic of Ireland, scoring one goal.
