Christian Atsu was found dead under the rubble following the devastating earthquake two weeks ago, according to Turkey-based agent Murat Uzunmehmet, who made the announcement just over two hours ago.

The striker had been trapped for 11 days before his death was discovered.

Mubarak Wakaso, Christian Atsu's closest friend both in his daily life and with the Black Stars, has reacted with sadness to the shocking news.

As well as being teammates, the two were also close friends who frequently exchanged jokes and banter on social media.

Following the news, Wakaso posted a short but moving statement on Twitter with the simple message "Rest well", expressing his deep sadness.

Following the earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria on Monday 6 February, Christian Atsu was reportedly among those buried under the rubble. As a result, both President Nana Akufo-Addo and President John Mahama asked for prayers for a speedy recovery.

The following day, Atsu's team announced that he had escaped with only a foot injury. Hatayaspor later said that Atsu had not been found and that the situation was a case of mistaken identity.

The widespread circulation of video footage of the rescue increased people's faith and optimism that Atsu would be found alive.
