In an incident that occurred on April 7, 2023, a 24-year-old commercial driver, Ebenezer Nkoom, was convicted by the Assin-Fosu District court and ordered to pay a fine of Gh¢14,400.00.

Alternatively, he would serve nine months in prison for biting the fingers of a police officer in an attempt to resist arrest. Mr. Nkoom pleaded guilty to thirteen different charges, including causing harm, unlawful harm, resisting arrest, and seven road traffic offenses. He implored the court, presided over by Abdul Majeed Illiasu, for leniency.

The complainants in the case were General Constable Samuel Ayamba and Police Woman Constable Sophia Essel, both officers stationed at the Central North Regional Police Command of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), according to Chief Inspector Gilbert Ayongo, who prosecuted the case.

He stated that the officers were assigned to manage traffic at the Assin-Fosu old market stretch of the highway when they noticed Mr. Nkoom, who was in charge of a Hyundai Atos Taxi with registration No. CR 1157-20, soliciting for and picking up passengers at an undesignated location without regard for other road users.

When the police officers approached him and instructed him to leave with his passengers immediately, Mr. Nkoom was defiant, claiming that he would continue to pick up passengers from that spot until the police arrested all other drivers who did the same.

He returned to the same location later that day and was subsequently arrested after driving the officers to an unknown location in an attempt to escape.

During his arrest, Mr. Nkoom bit the finger of General Constable Ayamba, causing severe injuries. A civilian motor rider who witnessed the incident quickly picked up the injured police officer and chased Mr. Nkoom, who abandoned his vehicle in the nearby bush and absconded. The two officers reported the incident to ASP Mr. Wonder Lumor, the Central North Regional MTTD Commander, who deployed two plain-clothed policemen and CID officers to the scene.

Upon investigation, it was discovered that Mr. Nkoom had failed to validate his driver's license since February 1, 2022, and was driving a commercial vehicle at the unauthorized age of 24 instead of 25 years and above. He was also driving without a spare tire, warning signals, fire extinguisher, and other necessary items.

In conclusion, the Assin-Fosu District court convicted Mr. Nkoom on several charges, and he was ordered to pay a fine or serve a prison sentence. The incident serves as a reminder that drivers must adhere to traffic regulations to ensure the safety of all road users.
