The Ministry of Energy has said former President John Dramani Mahama's record in the oil industry is shameful.

The ministry said Mr Mahama signed eleven oil deals while he was president, but none of them is currently producing oil.

The ministry also said four of the eleven contracts have expired.

"Ghanaians are reminded that the petroleum agreements for Ghana's three currently producing oil and gas fields were all signed by President Kufuor. The Mills-Mahama government inherited a country that was already doing well in all three of these areas.

"On the other hand, at least 11 oil deals were signed while Mahama was president. So far, none of those 11 are producing oil.

"John Mahama has a shameful record that he and his supporters can't defend under any circumstances. In fact, in order to get oil activities going again, the Ministry of Energy has terminated four of these John Mahama-era agreements and made them available to potential investors, according to a statement from the ministry.

The ministry also said from 2017 to date, Ghana has recorded an unprecedented success rate in the exploration of oil wells.

Mr Mahama said the last seven years under the Akufo-Addo government had been a waste, especially in the energy sector.

Mr Mahama said he left behind the Tweneboa Enyenra Ntomme (TEN) and Sankofa oil fields.

But he said there had been no new upstream production activities in the last seven years.

In a tweet, the 2020 presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) said “Wasted years! We bequeathed to the Akufo-Addo gov’t two new oil fields, TEN and Sankofa. Greed and ineptitude as against national interest mean a sad reality of no additional production activity in our upstream oil sector in the last 7 years.”

But in a statement responding to him, the Energy Ministry said “For the record, under Akufo-Addo’s presidency, Ghana has seen an unprecedented oil wells success rate from all exploration drilled from 2017 to date.

“Out of seven exploration wells drilled during the period, six of them were successful in seven discoveries.”

"During this period, six out of the seven exploration wells drilled were successful and led to seven discoveries."
