Friends, family and allies bid a sombre farewell to the young military personnel who died in Ashaiman, Accra.

According to reports, unidentified assailants attacked Imoro Sheriff, aged 21, on 4 March 2023.

A group assassinated the late Sheriff, a trumpeter with the Ghana Armed Forces Band stationed at Sunyani in the Bono Region, while he was allegedly visiting his girlfriend nearby, according to the limited information available on the case.

The highest ranking members of the Ghana Armed Forces attended the funeral rites which took place at the military cemetery at Burma Camp in Accra.

His lifeless body was carefully placed in the cemetery as colleagues, sympathisers and family members fought back tears as they watched in disbelief at his passing.

Many paid tribute to him as a hardworking man, a calm officer and someone who was loyal to the force.

Sheriff Imoro's 45-year-old mother, Afia Kyeraa, expressed deep grief for her son and said she would miss him dearly.

"I can't help it, but it's not easy for me. He was all I had and he was supposed to look after his siblings, but now he's gone. It's a challenge. I'm still amazed. He was my only hope.”

“I only sell tomatoes, onions and peppers to support Sherif; I don't do anything else. When he started working, he promised to take care of his brothers, but look what's happened," she said.

The 45-year-old mother, overwhelmed with pain and grief, said she would miss her son very much because he was the only real friend she had.

The family is only asking for justice to be done and for those responsible to be brought to justice.

Meanwhile, 150 civilians detained after the military raided Ashaiman to arrest the perpetrators have been released.

The military is still holding a group of 30.
