Dogs are becoming an endangered species in the Upper East Region because people there eat way too much dog meat.
It is thought that about 2500 dogs are eaten every day, which is why there aren't enough of them right now. I went to about ten of the most popular places to eat dog meat in the Bolgatanga township.
There, I met customers who were clearly upset because there wasn't enough of their favorite food.
Some of the conversations I had with them made me think that they were hooked on the dog meat. The vendors tried to give them pork, which they didn't want, but this didn't change their minds. Some of them called other vendors in different places to see if they had dog meat, but all of them told them the same thing: "No dog meat." This is how things are in the whole region.
I asked people in Navrongo, Sandema, Wiaga, Fumbisi, Paga, Zebila, Tongo, and many other places in the area, and they all told me that there aren't enough dogs there. I talked to some dog meat sellers from Tongo District, and they told me that they haven't been able to find dogs to sell in the area lately.
Some vendors have to go to the North East Region and other places to get dogs so they can bring them to their customers. Depending on where you are, one leg of dog meat costs between 100 and 150 GHS. People who eat dog meat don't favor one gender over another.
Men and women are both going there. People who work, like teachers and nurses, are all enjoying it.
Religiously, only the most serious and dedicated Muslims in the area do not eat dog meat. Except for a few, almost all Christians and traditionalists are inside the ‘dog game’.
