So there's a video going around the internet of some basic school students in Ghana who had to flee their classroom due to the presence of a live snake. The snake was first spotted on the ceiling of the classroom, but the teacher and other staff were able to bring it down and kill it.
Unfortunately, this isn't the first time that wild animals like snakes have appeared in Ghanaian classrooms. The school where this incident occurred is believed to be in Ghana based on the background sounds heard in the video.
The video not only shows how dangerous it can be for pupils to have wild animals in their classrooms, but also sheds light on the poor environmental conditions of the classroom itself. The school appears to be made entirely of wood, and is what's known as a 'death trap' school facility. This type of school is unfortunately common in Ghana, where many basic education facilities lack infrastructure, trained teachers, and learning materials.
The challenges facing basic education delivery in Ghana are especially difficult in hard-to-reach areas of the country. Many pupils in government basic schools make a lot of spelling mistakes when learning due to the unavailability of writing boards in schools. These challenges are a major issue for children living in marginalized and deprived rural communities. Systematic reforms are needed to end the deepening inequalities in basic education provided across rural and urban communities in deprived areas.
To achieve quality learning outcomes, there needs to be increased investment and resourcing of basic education. Public basic schools in deprived communities should receive the same resources available to schools in the cities, especially trained teachers. If this happens, pupils and students from rural schools would perform much better than they currently do in Ghana.
