Angel Maxine, Ghana's sole openly transgender musician, recently shared a personal experience on the If More Let's Divide Podcast hosted by Mutombo Da Poet and Frederick Eliz.
When she first attended secondary school, her appearance and voice led everyone to assume she was a girl, resulting in her being placed in the girls' dormitory. Despite having male genitalia, her outward appearance caused confusion.
Maxine eventually had to inform the housemistress of her biological sex, and she was subsequently stripped naked to confirm it. Maxine has used her music platform to promote LGBTQ+ rights in Ghana, where such individuals still face significant discrimination.
Her song "Wo Fie," featuring Sister Derby, has become an anthem for the country's LGBTQ+ community. However, the proposed Anti-LGBTQ+ bill before parliament could further marginalize the community, criminalizing advocacy and imposing harsher prison sentences.
