Nigerian Emmanuel Olaitan Johnson, who lives in Gaziantep, one of the affected cities in Turkey, is one of the lucky ones still alive after Monday morning's earthquake. He was able to escape the destruction caused by the quake.

According to the Street Journal, a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck both Turkey and Syria, killing more than 5,000 people and counting. More than 20,000 people were seriously injured and many more are still buried under the rubble of collapsed buildings.

Johnson told BBC Pidgin how he survived the earthquake. He said he knew something was wrong when he saw a crack in the wall of his building.

He said he was only wearing trousers, so he grabbed his children and ran into the snow with nothing else on.

"I was in my building and I could feel it shaking, but at first I wasn't too worried. But when I saw a crack in the wall, I ran out of the house with my wife and children. As we speak, my family and I are without a home. Before my house collapsed, I ran inside twice to get shoes and papers for myself, my wife and my children.

We are wearing singlets and boxers, and my children were walking barefoot in the snow," he said. "When I went up the stairs in my building, I almost lost my balance because of the strength of the earthquake and the shaking of the building," he said.

He says some people have taken refuge in strong buildings such as sports centres and museums.
