Two MPs Jailed For Beating Pregnant Colleague In Parliament

Monday, two Senegalese opposition MPs were sentenced to six months in jail for attacking a female colleague in parliament.

Amy Ndiaye, a pro-government lawmaker in Senegal, was hit in the face and then kicked in the stomach during a chaotic session of the National Assembly. This caused a lot of anger and debate about democracy in Senegal.

A woman who said that Senegal's Sonko raped her wants justice to be done.

Ousmane Sonko, a man with a sharp tongue, is at the heart of the crisis in Senegal.

After a trial that started on December 19, Mamadou Niang and Massata Samb were each sentenced to six months in prison.

They were also each fined 100,000 CFA francs (about $150) and told to pay damages of 5,000,000 CFA francs. The prosecutors wanted two-year sentences.

The fight broke out on December 1, during a regular vote on the budget for the justice ministry.

It started because of things Ndiaye said about Serigne Moustapha Sy, a powerful Muslim leader who backs the opposition but isn't a lawmaker.

After order was restored, Ndiaye passed out and had to be taken to the hospital. Her lawyer, Baboucar Cisse, said she was pregnant and it was feared she might lose the baby.

She has since left the hospital, but Cisse says that she is still in a very hard situation.

The event led to a heated discussion about how people talk in parliament and why women are attacked. It happened at the same time as a campaign to raise awareness about domestic violence.

Senegal is seen by many as an example of democracy and stability in West Africa, which is known for coups and dictatorships.

In July's legislative elections, there was almost a tie, so President Macky Sall's party had to work with other groups to stay in power.

Sall was first elected in 2012 for a seven-year term and then again in 2019 for a five-year term. He hasn't said what he plans to do for the 2024 presidential election.

Niang and Samb were arrested on December 15, but they did not show up to court.

Abdy Nar Ndiaye, one of their lawyers, told AFP, "They will stay in jail until they file an appeal."

Even though video shows that they did hit the lawmaker, they said they didn't.

Their lawyers said that the two couldn't be prosecuted because they were lawmakers, but the court didn't agree.
