A clash between the police and a group of young individuals at Akwatialine near Asawase in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region has resulted in the hospitalization of one person according to a report by OTEC News.
On Friday April 14, 2023, a riot broke out and dozens of individuals were arrested by the police. Reports suggest that the incident occurred when the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly, along with the Anti Robbery Unit of the Ghana Police Service, went to the area to evict traders from a parcel of land required for the construction of new stores.
According to Mohammed Umar, the Secretary for Akwatialine Wood Sellers Association, who spoke to OTEC News Jacob Agyenim Boateng, the police used live ammunition against unarmed civilians during the disturbance. He further added that some of their members were arrested without committing any offense.
The traders have been living in the area for over 50 years and are demanding that the Assembly provides them with a new location to relocate their businesses to.
The traders are yet to be given a new location, and without any prior warning, the Assembly brought in heavily armed police officers to forcefully evict them.
Mr. Umar Mohammed has appealed to authorities in the region to urgently resolve the issue and provide them with a new location to relocate their businesses.
