We won’t apologise to Akufo-Addo – Al Jazeera

Fri, 5 May 2023 Source: Club Mate

Al Jazeera has stated that it will not retract or apologize to President Akufo-Addo over its investigative documentary, 'Gold Mafia.' In a response to a request from JoyNews, Al Jazeera clarified that it does not owe the president or his office any apology because the documentary did not allege what the president's office suggested it did.

Although Al Jazeera corrected and clarified some of the contents in the letter from the Jubilee House, it stated that it will not remove the documentary from publication. The letter from the Jubilee House demanded an apology from Al Jazeera over its depiction of President Akufo-Addo in its documentary.

In the 'Gold Mafia' documentary, undercover journalists posing as Chinese gangsters interacted with Alistair Mathias, a key party involved in Zimbabwe's gold smuggling and money laundering syndicates. Mr. Mathias is described in the documentary as a financial architect who designs money laundering schemes for many corrupt politicians in Africa, including Ghana's president, who he claimed used to be his lawyer.

He also alleged that he was the biggest smuggler in Ghana at one point, raking out about $40 million to $60 million worth of gold a month from the West African country. Mr. Mathias outlined his modus operandi to the undercover journalists, suggesting that he takes huge contracts on behalf of Ghanaian politicians, inflates the cost, and subsequently splits the profit with them.

However, President Akufo-Addo denies acting as a lawyer for Mr. Mathias or his company, and Mr. Mathias has also denied ever being awarded any tender by the Ghanaian government or entering into any government contracts in any African country.
