Why Gobe - Attorney General fumes

Sun, 16 Apr 2023 Source: Club Mate

Nii Ayikoi Otoo, the President of the Ga Dangme Council, is upset about the way a traditional Ghanaian dish is being described.

This dish consists of cooked beans and gari, topped with fried plantain and red oil. Some people call it ‘Yↄ kɛ gari’, while others refer to it as ‘Gobɛ’. However, Mr Otoo's concern is specifically with the latter name.

He expressed his frustration on JoyNews’ Upfront show on Thursday, April 13, stating that “the name of my favourite food: ‘Yↄ kɛ gari’, which means beans and gari in the Ga language, has suddenly been turned into Gobɛ.” He added that this renaming of the dish is dangerous and could lead to the erosion of the Ga Dangbe culture.

Nii Ayikoi Otoo is worried about the gradual loss of his culture, noting that the Ga Dangme language used to be widely spoken and taught in schools, and there were plenty of books written in the language. He also mentioned that church services, singing, and preaching were all conducted in the GaDangme language and interpreted in Akan. To him, the change in the name of the dish is just one more step towards the dissipation of the Ga Dangbe culture.

In summary, Nii Ayikoi Otoo is frustrated that the name of his favorite food, ‘Yↄ kɛ gari,’ is being replaced by ‘Gobɛ.’ He is worried that this renaming could be a part of the gradual erosion of the Ga Dangbe culture, which he has witnessed throughout his adult life.
