A woman from KwaZulu-Natal was given a 20-year prison sentence for selling an albino child to a native doctor.
According to court documents, the South African woman gave the child to the traditional healer in Manguzi, which is in the very north of the province, in exchange for R100,000.
The provincial social development department said in a statement:
"She told James Mthembu, the healer, that a child from her area could be used for traditional medicine. The incident happened in June 2016, and Mthembu talked to the police after making a deal with the person who did it. The police took the woman into custody right away, and she was charged with trying to sell people.
A Ngwavuma magistrate's court has now given the woman 20 years in prison for trying to sell the child.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC Nonhlanhla Khoza praised the traditional healer for telling the woman's story when she went to him. Khoza said;
"We need more traditional healers like this who are honest and willing to tell the truth about wrongdoing. No medicine can be made from human flesh. Killing someone is cruel, and everyone who does it needs to face the law. We have talked to traditional healers several times, and they are very clear that human body parts can't be used to heal.
"We can't have situations in our towns where some people are always afraid to walk the streets because they are likely to be attacked. The woman's punishment should send a strong message to those who keep breaking the rights of people with albinism. We hope this will make people think twice before doing something so cruel."
