Deputies from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office arrested Kaydra Johnson, 28, on Monday 6 February and charged her with four counts of reckless endangerment for allegedly firing a gun into her Arlington home while her four children were inside, according to WREG.

The young girl wrote a story for class about a fight between her parents that ended in gunfire, police said, and the school counsellor at Donelson Elementary alerted the state Department of Children's Services about possible abuse.

The conflict is detailed in the story.

The mother and father were arguing. Mom told him to leave because he was smoking excessively. Dad hit Mum in the eye. The girl wrote: "Mummy says look what you've done.

From under the bed my mother took the gun. My sister, brother and I were in the living room. Father was shot three times by mother when she grabbed a gun. The wall absorbed the shots. His mother reportedly threatened to shoot him again if he returned and told him to sleep in his car in the driveway.

Police told WREG that when they arrived at Johnson's home, her 1-year-old and 4-year-old children were inside, but she was locked out.

After spending an hour and a half alone inside, the two children appeared to be OK. Police forced open the garage door and firefighters checked on them.

Officers found numerous bullet holes in the walls of the living room, bedroom and hallway.

Johnson admitted to shooting her husband at least twice, but told authorities she did so only after he forced his way into the house, assaulted her and beat her with a vacuum cleaner.

Police said she had bruises and a cut near her right eye.

Johnson claimed that three of her children were on the couch and the fourth was in the toilet when she fired the gun. Her husband was unharmed.

Two guns were found in the house.

Two of her children are in the care of their grandmother, while the other two are with their aunt.

According to WREG, Johnson was released from jail and has a court date on 23 February.
