Father's Unthinkable Act: Setting Daughter on Fire, Accusing Her of Witchcraft

Tue, 20 Jun 2023 Source: iNews

A 30-year-old man named Hamza Umar has been arrested by the Bauchi State Police Command for a horrific act of violence against his 8-year-old daughter, Hafsat Bala. According to the spokesperson of the command, SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, Hamza poured kerosene on Hafsat and set her on fire, alleging that she was a witch sent to kill him.

The incident took place on June 18, 2023, when Hafsat supposedly entered Hamza's compound and claimed that her elder sister had sent her to murder him. Hamza tried to send her away, but she resisted, insisting that she had buried some charms in the corner of the house. When Hamza asked her to remove the charms, she refused, leading him to become furious and carry out the horrifying act.

Upon receiving the information, the police quickly responded, and Hafsat was rushed to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi for immediate medical attention. The police have initiated a discreet investigation to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the incident. Once the investigation is completed, Hamza will face charges for the crimes committed.

The Bauchi State Police Command strongly condemned such a barbaric act, emphasizing that no one has the right to treat another human being in such a cruel manner. They stressed that individuals should not take the law into their own hands and should instead hand over any suspected offenders to the police or relevant law enforcement agencies for proper investigation and legal action.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of protecting the vulnerable members of society and addressing superstitious beliefs in a rational and compassionate manner. The authorities are committed to ensuring that justice is served in this case and that measures are taken to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
