Burning Issues: Former NPP MP Exposes Ghana’s Troubling Corruption Crisis: It’s Tough To Speak Out

Edward Enin, a former member of parliament for Obuasi-East, has expressed concern about the state of corruption in Ghana, stating that it has become harder to voice out against it.

He emphasised that corruption and corruption-related cases have increased under the current administration, making it difficult for individuals to comment on such matters.

"The rate of corruption and the quantity of corruption-related cases in the current administration are excessive. During an interview on Adom's Burning Issues, hosted by Akua Boakyewaa Yiadom, he stated, "It's difficult to speak out about it because there are sometimes consequences,"

As illicit actors appear to effectively evade accountability, he expressed scepticism about the government's ability to fulfil its promises of eliminating corruption.

"The government has pledged to eradicate corruption for years, but it appears impossible. People continue to engage in shady transactions and get away with it, he bemoaned. He also emphasised the current ruling party's lack of discipline, which he believes contributes to the prevalent corruption.

"There is no longer any discipline within the party, unlike during the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor. "I wonder if Kufuor's leadership made it difficult for us to confront corruption back then," he pondered.

The recent controversy surrounding Cecilia Dapaa, Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, sparked Mr. Enin's concerns.

Allegedly, her servants stole money from her, prompting public outrage and calls for accountability. Eventually, the Minister resigned from her position, and she is presently cooperating with the ongoing investigation's special prosecutor.

In light of the circumstances, Mr. Enin implored the public to be vigilant when selecting the government and to place a premium on discipline in governance.

"I recommend that any government that messes things up not be given another opportunity. He concluded, "I pray for a government that can ensure discipline and accountability."
