The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into a viral video showing a police officer dragging a suspect on the ground in Dadease, Ashanti Region, near Kumawu.

The police report that the officer has been detained and interdicted.

The Ghana Police Service stated in a press release that the officer will undergo due legal process.

"Yesterday, the Inspector General of Police dispatched a team from the Ashanti North Regional Police Command to meet with the relatives of the victim.

He also spoke with the victim's mother over the phone and assured her of a thorough investigation, according to the statement.

In April of this year, a colleague was attacked by a group of youth in the Kumawu area of the Ashanti Region, and two police officers were disciplined for failing to rescue their colleague.

Officers were on duty at a random checkpoint when one of their colleagues was assaulted by a driver and his passengers.

However, they failed to rescue him, subdue his assailants, and arrest them.

Their professional conduct was therefore referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for investigation.

In February 2023, a Sampa District Police Command officer was also disciplined for handcuffing a suspect without due process.

A cobbler in Suma Ahenkro near Sampa in the Jaman North District of the Bono Region was reportedly detained by a police officer known as Opete, who owns a drinking establishment, for failing to pay back GH2 in alcohol debt.

The victim indicated in a video that he and a companion visited the police officer's drinking establishment to make a purchase but were unable to pay for it.
