IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has denied accusations of withholding promotions of police officers who are eligible for advancement.

The denial comes in the wake of a leaked tape probe and a subsequent lawsuit filed by 82 aggrieved police officers against the Attorney General, the Ghana Police Service, and the IGP.

Some group of officers, in their lawsuit, alleged unfair and capricious behaviour on the part of the IGP, citing a delay in their promotions despite completing their studies under the study leave with pay policy.

In response to these claims, while appearing before the ad hoc parliamentary committee investigating the leaked tape that captured former Northern Regional NPP Chairman Bugri Naabu and the three senior police officers, on Tuesday, 12 September 2023, Dr. Dampare refuted all allegations, asserting that the Ghana Police Service has duly promoted all officers who are eligible for advancement.

He clarified: "There is no holdup of promotion of any junior officer in the whole police service."

According to the IGP, a systematic approach is in place to ensure that junior officers are promoted after four years of service and relevant training.

Dr. Dampare went on to state that: "Even as we speak, the structure has been that any junior officer who is four years is sent to training and they are promoted. And they are waiting to promote the next set of officers who are due for promotion…So nobody in the service whose promotion is being held. So that is another set of concocted stories which is being put out there for mischievous reasons."

He emphasized: "So everybody who is supposed to be promoted based on the junior rank has been done and everybody who is supposed to be promoted based on the senior rank have been promoted and that is where we are."
