The Ghana Education Service (GES) has placed seven head teachers of Senior High Schools (SHSs) in the Ashanti Region under interdiction after they were accused of charging new pupils fees that weren't allowed.

In separate statements dated December 8, 2023, the GES announced the initiation of investigations into the conduct of these headteachers, citing apparent breaches of regulations.

The affected headteachers include Mrs. Selina Anane Afoakwa, Headmistress of Kumasi Girls SHS, Mr. Nataniel Asamoah, Headmaster of Asanteman SHS, Mr. Andrews Boateng, Headmaster of Kumasi Senior High Technical School, and Mr. Kwadwo Obeng-Appiah, Headmaster of Manso-Edubia SHS.

The list continues with Mr. Daniel Boamah Duku, Headmaster of Agric Nzema Community SHS, Ms. Gladys Sarfowah, headmistress of Nkawie Senior High Technical School, and Mr. Ampong Ahmed Omar, Headmaster of Collins SHS.

In its official statement, the GES listed a number of unlawful charges that were being collected, including payments for anniversary fabric that was sewed, House dues, book and calculator sales, and anniversary cloth sales, among other things.

"In light of the aforementioned and in accordance with the code of conduct, you are required to withdraw so that an inquiry may be carried out. The Regional Director of Education shall receive all school property with effect from December 8, 2023, as instructed by the GES.

With this new development, the GES has now suspended 11 headteachers for collecting fees that are not authorized.

By guaranteeing that the financial obligations placed on parents and students comply with established norms, the action demonstrates the education authorities' dedication to maintaining accountability, transparency, and equity within the educational system.
