Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
The Ghana Police Service has justified its arrest of protesters that had gathered today to embark on a protest march to the seat of Government dubbed OccupyJulorbiHouse. The service said that forty-nine protesters were arrested for unlawful assembly and a violation of the public order act.
In a press release dated September 21, 2023 and sighed by Superintendent of Police Juliana Obeng, the Head of the Public Relations Unit, the Ghana Police Service stated that the protesters are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
The release added that the police service is not interested in preventing people from engaging in protests but stopped this protest because the organisers wanted to protest at a security zone ; the Jubilee House.
The service appealed to the general public to disregard invitations to engage in unlawful protests as, according to the police service, is the case in the OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration organised by the Democracy Hub.
