Aisha Huang to answer to galamsey charges after court dismisses submission of no case

A High Court in Accra, presided over by Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, has rejected a motion to dismiss filed by the attorneys of a Chinese national on trial for illicit mining-related offenses.

Justice Osei Marfo stated in her 45-minute-long ruling that the state had provided prima facie evidence against the accused.

After presenting 11 witnesses, the prosecution concluded its case on May 3, and Aisha Huang altered her plea from not guilty to guilty on the immigration offense of entering Ghana while she was prohibited from doing so.

She maintains her not-guilty plea on four counts of illegally conducting a mining operation, facilitating the participation of persons engaged in a mining operation, and illegally employing foreigners.

She was apprehended in 2022 for reentering Ghana and engaging in unlawful mining, despite having been deported for the same offense in 2018.

The case has been postponed until July 3 so that the defendants can submit witness statements.
