BPS demands immediate probe into police ‘troubling’ killing of 5 at Bortianor

The Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) has issued a plea for a "immediate" and "independent" investigation into the fatal shooting of some alleged landguards on Thursday by members of the anti-robbery unit of the Ghana Police Service at Bortianor in the Greater Accra Region. The killing occurred in the Bortianor neighborhood of Accra.

The police claimed that the gunfire resulted in five of the suspects being injured, all of whom were later pronounced dead at the hospital where they were taken.

The remaining suspects are said to have fled the area and "are still on the run" according to a news statement that was published by the police on Saturday, June 10th.

The FBI, on the other hand, stated that comparable occurrences that occurred in the recent past only fill it with worry because it is possible that the suspects are innocent.

It stated in a statement released over the weekend that if the pattern is allowed to continue to develop, it may put the lives of law-abiding residents in jeopardy.

The Executive Director, Nana Yaw Akwada, released a statement in which she expressed her dismay at the action taken by the police.

"With great distress, we acknowledge the possibility that the five individuals may have fallen victim to what appears to be an unjustified use of force," it added. "We acknowledge this possibility with great distress."

"This is extremely troubling and goes against the justice and fair treatment principles that are outlined in our constitution."

It was stated there would be a restoration of public faith and confidence in the legal system after a comprehensive inquiry, which would "shed light on the truth and enable necessary actions to be taken to prevent the further recurrence of such distressing events."

In the meantime, the police have issued a call to the general public, including the people who live in Bortianor, asking them to be vigilant and "promptly report any individuals with gunshot wounds who may be seeking medical treatment."

“Your assistance in this matter will be much appreciated by the law enforcement personnel.
