Be transparent with limited voter registration – Mahama challenges EC

John Dramani Mahama, the 2024 flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has charged the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) with being "more transparent" in the processes leading up to this year's nationwide voter registration campaign, which begins on Tuesday.

The former President encouraged the EC to take into account numerous requests to expand the exercise to electoral zones.

Mr Mahama announced them on Wednesday, September 6, during a Facebook Live session with his supporters.

First and foremost, he urged eligible Ghanaians to visit registration centers beginning Tuesday, September 12, to register to vote for the desired change on December 7, 2024.

He was concerned, though, that the EC had ignored pleas to bring the exercise to its election offices.

"I would like to join those who have urged the EC to reconsider its decision to limit registration to its district offices only," he stated, emphasizing that this is mandated by the EC's own laws.

"It is also our very strong recommendation that, in accordance with regulation 22(b) of CI 91 as amended by CI 126, the Commission listens to the call for the exercise to be expanded to take place in electoral areas rather than just the Commission's district offices."

"This will eliminate many inconveniences, such as transportation, a lack of funds to travel from distant locations, and access."

The drill is set to conclude on Monday, October 2.

It will be held every day between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

The EC announced the exercise ahead of the district level and unit committee elections on Tuesday, December 19.
