Boakye Agyarko withdraws from NPP run-off

Former Energy Minister Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko has withdrawn from Saturday's runoff election against former Asante Mampong Member of Parliament (MP) Francis Addai-Nimoh.

According to Mr. Agyarko, the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) policy of allowing only National Council members to vote is unconstitutional.

Wednesday, August 30th, a decision was made to limit Saturday's run-off, which will elect the fifth candidate for the November 4 Presidential Primary, to Council members only.

According to General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the decision was made in part to reduce expenses.

However, Mr. Agyarko asserts that this is unconstitutional and that he will not participate in any unconstitutionality.

In a letter to the chairman of the Presidential Elections Committee, he wrote, "I find it completely unacceptable that such an unconstitutional act could be perpetuated on the altar of expediency."

"Am I to assume that the party was unaware of the financial implications? It is inexcusable that the regulations of the game will be altered in the middle of the game, he stated on August 31.

"Such a flip-flopping of rules and regulations is detrimental to fair play and justice.

"It is a blatant violation of the party's constitution and the Special Electoral College's guidelines. I cannot associate myself with this unconstitutional conduct."

He stated that his conscience would condemn him if he participated in a process based on a "errant decision."

"Accordingly, I earnestly request that you refrain from such a contest. As always, I send my best wishes."

This decision will presumably give Mr. Addai-Nimoh the go-ahead to compete in the November 4 primary.
