Chelsea appoint Mauricio Pochettino as new manager

After their poorest Premier League campaign history, Chelsea has turned to former Tottenham and PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino to turn the team around.

The Argentinean tactician has been given a two-year deal with a one-year extension option.

Chelsea failed to qualify for European football despite massive investment from the new owners, completing the season in 12th place in the Premier League.

Even with their recent successes—winning the Champions League and Club World Cup in 2021—the club is still hopeful that Pochettino can elevate them back to the top of English football.

"Mauricio is a top-notch coach with a stellar resume. We are all looking forward to his arrival with great anticipation," the club said in a press statement.

He'll collaborate with athletic directors Paul Winstanley and Lawrence Stewart.

“Mauricio’s experience, standards of excellence, leadership qualities and character will serve Chelsea Football Club well as we move forward,” Winstanley and Stewart said in a statement.

“He is a winning coach, who has worked at the highest levels, in multiple leagues and languages. His ethos, tactical approach and commitment to development all made him the exceptional candidate.”

Pochettino, 51, will officially begin his new role on July 1, 2023.

He replaces interim boss Frank Lampard, who struggled during his short tenure, winning just one of his 11 games in charge.

Lampard had taken over from Graham Potter, who also failed to make a significant impact after being appointed following the dismissal of Thomas Tuchel earlier in the season.
