Family suspects foul play in death of former Assemblyman of Nogokpo

The deceased's family has denied media claims that Christian Kwame Amuzu, a former assemblyman for the Nogokpo-Ativuta Electoral Area in the Ketu South Municipality in the Volta Region, committed suicide.

The late former assemblyman's elder brother, Torgbi Atsu Gledza, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that he was a hale and vigorous man who had never complained of an illness or other problems before his sudden demise.

The respected and successful businessman supposedly committed suicide, according to initial accounts, but the family believes there was more to the abrupt death than is being assumed.

"C. K. is a well-known individual in our society, a prosperous businessman, and a well-known figure in politics — this is a man who has succeeded in life. We actually don't think he could have killed himself given his position and standing in society; there was more to his death than what has been reported, according to Torgbi Gledza.

The late assemblyman's wife, according to reliable sources, did not spend the night at home before his death that tragic morning, and earlier claims that she dropped their kids off at school were far from the truth, according to information the family has so far gathered.

Residents in the neighborhood were in shock and astonishment when they discovered the deceased's body hanging on a rope in his living room in the early hours of Wednesday, June 14. They had no idea what would have caused his mysterious death.

The area's current assemblyman, Mr. Jonas Fotor Agbagba, informed the GNA that he had met with the deceased former assemblyman the day before the event and that they had spoken about the electoral district.

I recently met with him on Tuesday. As you may be aware, the local assembly elections are coming up soon, so we talked about how to best position myself for the election as well as other issues pertaining to the development of the electoral area. It's startling that he truly has the region's best interests at heart; I just can't believe it, bemoaned Mr. Agbagba.

The abrupt passing of the former assemblyman, according to him, was a huge loss for the Nogokpo-Ativuta electoral district.

Many persons in the electorate that the GNA spoke with characterized the late former assemblyman as a kind and loving person who had helped many locals pursue higher education, given support for the livelihood of the women folk, and provided work to many young people.

The late Christian Kwame Amuzu was a businessman and partner of Sayon and Express Petroleum Companies. His friends and family affectionately referred to him as C.K. He also owned other businesses in several areas of the Volta region.

He is believed to be one of the NDC's top financial backers in the Ketu South constituency and an enthusiastic supporter of the party.

Party supporters have called his untimely death "a big loss" to the NDC in the constituency.

Members of the NDC in the constituency were in complete shock following his abrupt demise.

Since the occurrence, people have flocked to his house in droves to offer their condolences to the grieving family.

The late former assemblyman is credited with being a key player in the subsequent standoff between the Nogokpo chiefs and people and Archbishop Charles Agyin-Asare.

He was rumored to have headed a delegation sent by a well-known politician with local roots to persuade the town's traditional leaders to handle the situation behind closed doors and let sleeping dogs lie.

Before his tragic death, "he was making sure that the matter was settled amicably," a close ally told the GNA.

The late C.K. Amuzu's body had been placed in the Sacred Heart Catholic morgue in Abor, and the Agbozume police had subsequently invited his wife and housekeeper to help with their inquiries into the circumstances surrounding his passing.
