Filling 02 Arena and winning Grammy is not the standard to measure success of an artiste – Wendy Shay defends Ghanaian artistes

Wendy Shay, a Ghanaian singer, has taken a position against the prevalent notion that selling out large venues and winning Grammy Awards are the only indicators of an artist's success.

She questioned, in a tweet that reverberated throughout the music industry, why filling iconic venues like the O2 Arena and earning Grammy Awards have become the standard measures of an artist's success.

Wendy Shay, 27, urged Ghanaians to revise their conceptions of success by drawing parallels to internationally renowned artists Bob Marley and 2Pac, who attained legendary status without winning a Grammy.

"Why has filling 02 and winning a Grammy become the standard for measuring an artist's success? Bob Marley and 2Pac are accomplished musicians who have never received a Grammy Award. Let the musicians of Ghana breathe! Wake up, Ghana!" she tweeted.

The 'Survivor' hitmaker echoes recent remarks made by fellow musicians such as Fameye and Amerado, who criticized Ghanaians for not fully supporting their artists at smaller international events while demanding enormous turnouts at larger venues such as the O2 Arena.

Wendy Shay's response follows the recent triumph of Nigerian Afrobeats musician Asake, who performed at the O2 Arena in a historic concert.

Although significant, this accomplishment challenges the notion that only international musicians can achieve such milestones.

It also raises concerns regarding the varying levels of support Ghanaian artists receive in comparable contexts.
