Five talking points from Ghana Premier League final matchday

Mon, 12 Jun 2023 Source: Island Reporters

The 2022/23 Ghana Premier League came to a dramatic conclusion on Sunday, with Medeama SC winning the championship and relegating Tamale City to the Division One League.

Abedneo Tetteh's efforts paid off as he completed the season with 18 goals to earn the award for leading scorer. For the first time in the previous three seasons, neither Hearts nor Kotoko finished in the top two.

Here are five points of discussion from the final day.

MEDEAMA END 46-YEAR WESTERN REGION TITLE DROUGHT

Medeama SC won their first Ghana Premier League championship with a 3-0 victory over Tamale City at Akeon Park. The Yellow and Mauves are the twelfth club to win the competition, ending a run of 46 years that began with the Western Region's Sekondi Hasaacas in 1977. They are also the third club to win it for the region, joining Sekondi Eleven Wise, who won in 1960.

Medeama will now commence preparations for next year's CAF Champions League with the goal of meeting the new requirements and bolstering their roster for the competition.

This is their third significant trophy, following FA Cup victories in 2013 and 2015 in which they defeated Asante Kotoko both times.
