NPP’s Arthur K urges next President to abandon National Cathedral project

Dr. Kobina Arthur Kennedy, a major member of Ghana's New Patriotic Party (NPP), believes that the future president of Ghana, after Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, should forsake the National Cathedral project if he or she is prudent.

According to him, the initiative is a waste of resources, and no one should "throw good money after bad money."

His remarks follow the departure of two members of the board of trustees, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams and Reverend Eastwood Anaba.

They had highlighted a lack of project auditing after making a request in January.

However, the Secretariat responded by calling the venerable men of God's claims fake.

"The attention of the Secretariat of the National Cathedral project has been drawn to a letter addressed to the President - sighted in the media before Board members received copies - of the resignation of two of the members of the Board, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan Williams and Rev Eastwood Anaba," the statement, which was issued on Wednesday, October 18, was released.

"The reason given in the letter for their resignation is said to be a lack of any information, whatsoever, following their January 23, 2023 resolution calling for an audit of the National Cathedral project, and a complete cessation of work on the project," Executive Director Dr Paul Opoku-Mensah added in a statement signed by him.

It went on to say that multinational accounting and auditing firm Deloitte had been hired to audit the project, much to the surprise of the two clergymen.

Dr Arthur Kennedy, speaking about the fallout, said the project was doomed from the start because President Akufo-Addo misled the Ghanaian people.

He claims that the current status of the project exemplifies how careless the government of the day has been with the resources given to it and how little it cares about Ghanaians.

As a result, the US-based medical practitioner advises the next president, who will be elected on December 7, 2024, to simply cancel this initiative.

"If the person is wise, he will abandon it because this is the cost of sand." That's what my economist buddies tell me, and we shouldn't waste good money on bad," he told host Alfred Ocansey.

"This money has been wasted and the more money we put in this, the more wastage we will get."

"I will have to use that money to improve tourism infrastructure like building major hotels in the Cape Coast area, improving the Cape Coast-Accra road, rehabilitate places like Asebu Kwamankese where Asebu Amanfi and others have relics," he said if he had $400 million, which is estimated to have been invested in the project so far.

He maintains that no serious tourist will skip all of Europe's renowned churches to visit a Bible museum in Sub-Saharan Africa.

According to him, the project requires thorough inspection since he fears Ghanaians' hard-earned money has been "looted and misappropriated."
