Nigerians are still taking our stuff, making it much more big and naming it something else – Abiana laments
Abiana, a Ghanaian Hi-life singer, has addressed the common practice of Nigerian musicians adopting Ghanaian music, recreating it, and sharing it abroad with no credit or reference.
Abiana investigated the problems confronting Ghana's music industry, namely the perception of highlife and its potential for international recognition.
"We used to say highlife was something a long time ago. "We were discussing Tictacs in Nigeria with Tony Tetula," she revealed.
According to the former backing vocalist, Ghanaian culture has had a significant influence on Nigerian music, which has at times rebranded Ghanaian musical aspects as their own, frequently with more success.
She bemoaned the fact that, while being the birthplace of these musical themes, Ghana occasionally falls short in terms of notoriety and financial success.
"Even Nigerians are taking our stuff and making it much bigger and renaming it something else," she revealed.
During the discussion on "The Day Show," Abiana advocated for a collaborative effort to showcase Ghanaian highlife to the rest of the world.
"So why don't we push ourselves and say, hey, highlife is our thing, let's just call ourselves highlife musicians, and the rest will follow?" she underlined.
