Police just fear-mongering, thinking our demo will turn into military coup – Mahama Ayariga

Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central Constituency, says Minority MPs in Parliament had marched on the same path in the past in a peaceful and "very successful" demonstration.

He said that the same cops protected him.

As a result, he finds it difficult to understand why the police say they cannot guarantee the same level of security this time.

For him, the cops are simply instilling fear and employing intimidation to repress them.

He announced this on Monday, September 4.

It follows an Accra High Court decision to rule on an objection brought by MPs to an interim injunction application filed by the Accra Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service about the planned demonstration against the Governor of the Bank of Ghana and his two deputies.

The protest was scheduled on Tuesday, September 5, but due to the Court's decision to rule on the Minority's objection on Friday, September 8, it has been rescheduled for Tuesday, September 12.

Minorities' #OccupyBoGProtest is cancelled on Tuesday.

Mr Ayariga told host Alfred Ocansey that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs will abide by the court's judgment on Friday.

"We're law-abiding citizens," he declared. "These are Members of Parliament; we make the law, so we cannot be the first to say that we will not comply with any court decision," says one. "However, we are very confident that the court will not revise the route because there is nothing wrong with it."

The rally, branded #OccuoyBOGProtest, is expected to begin in front of Parliament House and proceed to the Ministry of Finance, High Court Complex, Kinbu, Makola, Rawlings Park, Opera Square, and the Bank of Ghana.

According to the Bawku Central MP, there is no problem with this route, and the police are merely instilling fear.

"It is only the police who are using fear-mongering and intimidation tactics, telling people that there is a fear of a military coup, and it is the demonstration that will serve as the basis for a military coup."

"That's just scaremongering." They are using intimidation techniques, and the rest of us cannot allow the police to fail to do their basic duties while citing threats of a military takeover as justification.

"In the past, we marched along the same route with the same police providing support, and the marches were very peaceful and very successful, so you can't tell us that today you've lost that capacity to police us to march along the same routes."
