The Ghana Police Service's Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) has hinted at introducing an automated system known as Traffitech-GH to police road traffic laws.

According to MTTD, the Traffitech-GH system employs cameras and sensors to automatically capture images or videos of vehicles that violate traffic regulations like as speeding and running red lights.

Speaking at a first stakeholders meeting, Director-General of MTTD COP Francis Ebenezer Doku stated that Traffitech-GH will deploy fixed, mobile/in-vehicle, and radar gun systems to record, among other things, speeding and red-light jumping.

He stated that images or videos of traffic violations will be automatically submitted to their office for certification and the delivery of a message through SMS to car owners for payment as a penalty.

He went on to say that other traffic violations that will be punished under Traffitech-GH include expired roadworthiness certificates, improper overtaking, non-use of seat belts, driving with an expired license, driving uninsured vehicles, using mobile phones while driving, and siren misuse.

COP According to Francis Doku, the Traffitech-GH message will include the location, date, and time of the traffic offense, as well as the car registration number, offence description, payment amount, and deadline.

He was quick to point out that the Traffitech-GH fine can be paid by Mobile Money, online at www.Traffitech-GH.gov.gh, or at the bank within 14 days of the notification's issue.

Those who fail to comply within the specified time will be charged an extra 1% penalty on the original Traffitech-GH fine for each day they fail after the 14-day grace period.

Traffitech-GH, according to COP Francis Doku, will help strengthen the enforcement of road traffic laws and regulations.

He also urged the public to embrace and cooperate with the new automated system to help prevent road accidents.
