Report cases of abuse – Gender minister urges women and girls

Thu, 15 Jun 2023 Source: Island Reporters

Lariba Zuweira Abudu, the Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, has advised women and individuals who are victims of abuse to be courageous and report the incidents to the police.

According to her, there are laws in place to protect the rights and privileges of citizens, but the laws can only be effective if incidents are reported.

"The law is dissuasive; we must report to the police." A culture of non-reporting exists. The police will investigate and the law will take its course if we file a report.

"The statutes exist to defend you if you report crimes. On June 14, she stated, "I will encourage everyone, regardless of the situation, to call the police when something suspicious occurs."

Her response was in response to Emefa Apawu's query about whether the laws are sufficiently deterrent to prevent gender-based abuses.

A recent incident in the Kopela community in the Upper East Region involved the sexual abuse of a woman and four other females by several men.

The Member of Parliament for Walewale stated that she was devastated by the news, as no one should be permitted to endure such mistreatment.

"I do not enjoy being a woman. She stated that this should not be done to any woman, regardless of her status.

In the interim, she stated that the ministry was in constant contact with the police and was committed to ensuring that investigations lead to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

When queried whether the ministry has contacted the woman and the other victims, she stated, "We have instructed the director of social welfare in the Upper East Region to contact the woman and report back to us." I am, with any luck, awaiting her report."

Earlier in the day, the woman who was stripped naked and abused in a community in the Upper East Region disclosed that four other females were also abused and raped by the same individuals who assaulted her.

The 26-year-old victim, [Name withheld], stated that she and four other females were returning from the market, but they had to travel through the bush to reach their destination.

According to her, they encountered these individuals while traveling, who assaulted her and dragged the other four into the bush.
